VITA STANDARDS ORGANIZATION
Reflector Services

Revised Reflector Instructions -- In November 1996 VITA moved its email reflectors from syspac.com to its in-house server with domain name vita.com and condensed the esse reflector lists from three lists (esse_io, esse_osapi, esse_tools) to one list (esse). All individuals on the previous lists were moved to the new list and notified of the change. Contact John Rynearson (techdir@vita.com) if you have any questions.

Expert Summary
If you are an experienced email/reflector user here are the facts you need. If you need more information, please read the rest of this document.

VITA currently supports the following list specifically set up for the esse project. This list is named esse. To subscribe, send email to majordomo@vita.com with a subscribe <list> command in the text of the email and nothing else. Leave the subject blank. For example, subscribe esse, will put your name on the esse mailing list. To delete your name send an unsubscribe command. For example, unsubscribe esse will delete your name from the esse list.

To use the reflector, send email to esse@vita.com. Everyone on the mail list will receive the message.

DETAILED INFORMATION

Background
Communications play a key role in the development of any standard. To further the development of standards, the VITA Standards Organization provides email mailing lists via "reflectors" to facilitate communications among standards developers.

Reflectors
What is a reflector? It is an email address that contains a list of email addresses. When a message is sent to this email address, it takes the message and sends (reflects) a copy to each email address on the list.

The VSO's reflectors use a program called majordomo to reflect messages and to manage the mail lists.

Embedded Systems Software Environment
Currently, VITA provides one mail list to support its Embedded Systems Software Environment (esse) standards effort in the areas of input/output, operating systems api, and tools interface. This list is named, esse.

Subscribe/Unsubscribe
To follow and participate in these efforts, you must have email capability on the Internet and you must subscribe to the list you are interested in. To subscribe, you send an email message to majordomo@vita.com. You don't need to put anything in the Subject Field of the email. In the body of the email you need to put the following:

subscribe <list>

where <list> is the name of the list you want to subscribe to. For example,

subscribe esse

would subscribe you to the esse mailing list. Majordomo will provide a response to your message to confirm that your name has been placed on the list.

To remove your name from a list, use the unsubscribe command. For example, to remove your name from the esse list, send an email to majordomo@vita.com. Don't put anything in the subject field. In the body of the email, put the following:

unsubscribe esse

This command will remove your name from the esse list and you will no longer receive any mail sent to esse@vita.com.

Using the Reflector
Once on the list you will receive any email that anyone sends to that respective list. For example, if you subscribe to the esse list and someone sends an email message to esse@vita.com, then you and everyone else on the esse list will receive that message. If you want to send a message to everyone on the esse list, just prepare an email message and send it to esse@vita.com.

General Usage and Problems
This list should only be used for information relevant to the development of the specific standard.
