VSO MEETING SHERATON WORLD - ORLANDO, FLORIDA WEDNESDAY, MARCH 8, 1995 Ray Aldermen opened the meeting at 8:30 AM First item on the agenda was introduction of attendees. Welcome to all. Review of agenda. Agenda was modified to add a presentation from AMP re: connector issues. Agenda was modified accordingly and approved. Minutes from last meeting were accepted. Chairmans report Ray advised that he has accepted a temporary position as Executive Director of VITA at the request of the VITA Board as a result of Mike Humphrey's resignation to pursue other interests. Ray gave a brief report on OMAC (Open Modular Architecture Controllers) re. automotive requirements for open spec'. The big (3) USA car makers are making a move to go to open systems for controllers. Ray advised that both Europe and USA are using VME boxes. Ray is developing a group of interested suppliers to visit Detroit auto makers to show capability to meet their requirements. There is a list of 300 companies that have inquired to the VITA office re. information recently published in trade magazines about VME in the control's industry. Ray presented foils depicting where VME is going (see attached). VITA's goals and objective is to drive the market with special interest groups ie. visit Detroit, selective ads, education/training and other programs. Example: If Russia adopts VME for power controls, VME market could double in 2 years. VITA to look at other market segments ie. China, global Telecom et. el.. VME is about a $1 billion/yr. market with potential to grow to $3 billion in near term. Question regarding the VITA TC/BC and relationship to VSO. Business committee will be looking at marketing issues. Technical committee will address VME technology issues. TC will develop position statements. VSO is a standards writing group. All are on equal footing. VSO elections: John Rynearson Nominations committee(John Rynearson, Wayne Fischer & Dennis Terry) presented a slate of candidates for the offices of chair and vice-chair. John introduced the candidates and called for nominations from the floor. There being NO nominations from the floor the nominations were closed. Each candidate had a chance to give an overview of why they want to be chair or vice chair. John noted that Jim Koser fills the office of secretary on a meeting by meeting basis. John and the membership thanked Jim for his efforts. John advised that Kim Clohessey, current vice chair, could not make this meeting but personally thanked Kim for his efforts for last year. His effort as editor of VME 64 were outstanding. Results of the vote are as follows: Chair: Ray Alderman - elected chair Lou Francz Bob McKee Vice chair: Bruce Wallace Mike Monroe - elected vice chair VME64 Extensions - Wayne Fischer, FORCE Wayne advised there will NOT be another pinout change. Draft 0.8 is now out for review. The only other addition that may be added is a chapter for block transfers to be known 2EBLT (2 edge BLT). No decision on task group ballot to date. P1101.10 - Eike Waltz, Rittal Eike is going for international standards for P1101.10. Based on replies from the November ballot, all comments were addressed in new draft. Keying of front panel was incorporated. A sample was shown to the membership. Frank Hom was commended for his effort to create drawings. Original concept was not compatible with IEC 297. New design of alignment pins is now compatible both forward and backward with IEC and VME with 4096 keying combinations. IEC 48d for EMC updates are not in publication to date. It is two months late. Eike will distribute the report when available to VME community. Alternative Keying Mechanisms - Mike Thompson & Paul Mazura, Schroff Samples of alternative keying and injector/ejector mechanism were presented to the group for VME64 Extensions. Paul Mazura of Schroff, Germany, presented the material. Requirements for IEC 217 were taken into consideration along with IEEE P1101.10. See attached foils. Keys will stop boards from engagement of connectors up to 5 mm before the connectors mate. Paul also presented ESD solution to board or front panel. Note: A microswitch would be used for live insertion. Shroff would supply a written statement for licenses of the design. Implementation of design is 4-6 months after the standard is released. Concern for only 64 key combinations and field installation were discussed. Paul advised that other options could be implemented. Eike Waltz feels there may be a backward compatibility issue with existing VME boards. Discussions followed. Ray Alderman asked for a motion to open this issue for discussion. Motion was made by Mike Munroe and seconded by Dick Somes to open the issue regarding keying and other issues as they relate to P1101.10. Motion failed. It takes a 2/3 majority vote to open the issue. The vote was NOT to open the issue. It was agreed to address the issue in P1101.10. Patent Issues - Elwood Parsons, AMP Two patents issued to Teradyne were discussed. Patent #'s 4869677 Sept. 26, 1989 and 4655518 Apr. 7, 1987, have items that may be an issue regarding new 160 pin connector. It is imperative that we resolve this area. Chair asked connector companies to review and report at the next meeting. Eike Waltz asked that all patents related to mechanical issues be reviewed as related to the P1101.10 and VME64/VME64 Extensions. Chair thanked AMP for presenting info regarding patent. Chair requests that the minutes show we want to clear this issue. Harting will put into the minutes design parameters for the connectors. Drawings are part of the minutes. PCI Study Group - Mike Munroe , Hybricon Mike asked to start a study group. The study group was granted and Mike was named as chair. VME64 Connector Issues - Manfred Lang, EPT Automatic daisy chain may/may not be required per Wayne Fischer. We will use as a tolerance min clearance = 0.2 mm, max = 0.4 mm Discussion of VME64 connector tolerancing - Bruce Wallace, Northern Telecom This is a potential problem during insertion. Main concern is tolerance of placement of connector. Eike Waltz says follow 1101.1. Connector provides the tolerance. Ray Alderman asks 9U group to look at problem. Is it a problem for 9U folks, report back to group. We are going from .2mm to .1mm, thus a further restricion, but still insures backward compatibility. See attached drawing. VITA 1.x-199x, H.A. VME Report - Wayne Fischer, FORCE A special VSO meeting was held yesterday with 26 people in attendance to discuss the next generation VME standard for "High Availability VME". See attached report. Wayne feels Futurebus+ is not going to make it in the commercial market. We do not want to repeat the same mistakes that Futurebus+ made. The goal agreed upon at yesterday's meeting is to provide Scaleable Fault Management and Dynamic Configuration in Live VME Systems. Target is to keep added cost to less than $50.00 over existing VME64 boards. The group decided to change the name of the draft standard to "FMDC/VME" (Fault Management Dynamic Configuration/VME) rather than High Availability (H.A.VME) until a better name is proposed. Wayne announced that the next meeting of this activity will be the day before the next regular VSO meeting in May. He will publish the first draft of the FMDC/VME Draft Standard by the end of April, in time for the second VSO mailing (April 28). 2EBLT (Son of SSBLT) Discussion, Chau Pham, Motorola SSBLT (Source Synchonous Block Transfer) was proposed several years ago and then, due to complexity and compatibility concerns, removed from the VME64 specification. 2EBLT (2 Edge Block Transfer), proposed by Mike Hazenfratz, Micro Memory, and Chau Pham, Motorola, is an attempt to achieve the data transfer rates of SSBLT by using a simpler protocol that would be easier to implement. See attached presentation. Discussion followed. Question: Should 2EBLT be put into VME64Extensions? Per Chau this will be ready by July. By May meeting 2EBTL draft will be ready for review. Wayne Fischer made a proposal to add 2EBTL to VME64 Extensions in July and if there are problems we will withdraw the proposal. VITA 1-1994 VME64 specification, John Rynearson Document was sent to ANSI. ANSI will determine if consensus has been demonstrated. John will advise status from ANSI. Draft 1.11 is in the VITA office. Document is in public domain with VITA as guardian of the specification. VITA has right to publish the document. John indicated that he is looking at methods of providing the VME64 specification in electronic form. Issues regarding IEEE 1014, 1014R and VSB were discussed. Per Ray Alderman, the standards board of IEEE will meet in May '95. He expects to see these documents rescinded by the review board. VITA 3-1994, BLLI - Bob McKee See attached report. Editorial changes will be added and document re-distributed for public review. Note: This is a Recommended Practices GUIDE. VITA 6-1994 - SCSA, Lou Francz Standard is in re-circulation ballot for 4 weeks. Change bars for the edited version depict changes. Public review is 60 days due to large number of changes. VITA 5-1994,RACEway Interlink, Bob Blau Standard is in re-circulation ballot for 4 weeks. Change bars for the edited version depict changes. Public review is 60 days due to large number of changes. PMC Bridge with RACEway, Bob Blau Bob showed how PMC can be used with Raceway. See attached foils. PMC Technology to be available by '96. High Power VME, Don Tilton/Mort Havey Mort Havey, E-Systems, and Don Tilton, ISR, were invited to the VSO by Wayne Fischer to present new concepts in system and board cooling. Cooling of up to 1,000 watts/board. ISR is working with E-systems to develop this technology. Note: This is NOT a proprietary solution. Looking to form a study group to handle thermal issues. Heat sinks are getting too big. By using a liquid cooling system greater heat can be dissipated. Technology is in development state. Meeting was adjourned at 6PM VSO MEETING SHERATON WORLD - ORLANDO, FLORIDA THURSDAY, MARCH 9, 1995 Chairman Ray Alderman opened the meeting at 8:30 AM PMC - Wayne Fischer, FORCE Wayne advised that they are doing the last re-circulation ballot of the IEEE P1386.x draft standards.
