Introduction
Bob Downing called the meeting to order at 10:35 AM and asked members to introduce themselves. The agenda was reviewed and several changes were .
John Rynearson, VITA, reviewed the ANSI Patent Policy and the VSO Patent Policy. See attached overheads. John asked for patent disclosures. None were made.
Ray Alderman, VITA, reported on several VITA activities. No further activity has been reported regarding Nortel patent issues. Ray stated that VITA is working collectively with PICMG on common issues such as power distribution and heat dissipation requirements. Ray reported that the Infiniband trade association will not allow other trade associations or consortia to be members.
John Rynearson gave the standards report. See attached overheads.
Hermann Strass is now VITA's representative for Europe. US members with questions relevant to European activities should contact Hermann. Hermann noted a number upcoming trade shows in Europe. Hermann expressed several European members desire to develop a VMEbus technology logo for use on VME equipment. Hermann presented the logo and asked for member comments. Hermann commented that the VME FAQ on the VITA web site was very popular and that he would be submitting additional material. Hermann has collected information on the use of electronic packaging. He will publish this information and will ask for feedback.
Jim Botte, Nortel, submitted a proposal to form a working(task) group to study the similarities between commercial requirements for military and telecom applications. Nortel, NWSC, and MITRE will sponsor this effort. The goal is to come up with a matrix delineating similarities. The group would like to present the results of the study at the July meeting in Vancouver. A sign-up list was circulated. See attached overheads.

Bob Downing reviewed efforts on VITA 34 to date and showed the prototype boxes he had come up with at the previous meeting.
Frank Hom, APW, gave a review of the structure of APW and Tom Perazzon, APW, followed up with a general overview of thermal cooling issues. See attached presentation.
Tim Knowles, Carbon Fiber Technology, gave a general overview of the use of carbon fiber technology in thermal cooling applications. See attached presentation.
Don Tilton, ISR Spray Cooling, presented how his company has used spray cooling technology on VMEbus systems to cool electronic enclosures. See attached presentation(HTML).

Mike Thompson, Pentair, presented a set of slides by Chad Morgan, AMP, entitled "The Impact of PWB Construction on High Speed Signals". The conclusion of the presentation was that FR4 material was acceptable if you watch the layout. The next activity for VITA 31 will be to refine the pin assignment and look at possible architectures.
VITA 1.5, 2eSST is now a "Trial Use Standard". Changes to VITA 1.5 must take place through the task group balloting procedure. Drew Berding, Arizona Digital, stated that he had noticed a possible "latch-up" problem. He will discuss this with Mac Rush and propose a solution at the next VSO meeting.
Jim Botte, Nortel, discussed reactivating VITA 1.4, System Level Live Insertion. After more discussion the membership asked John Rynearson to contact Lou Francz, current chair of VITA 1.4. A sign-up list was circulated for renewed interest in VITA 1.4. See attached.
The VSO meeting was adjourned at 5:05 PM.
Thursday, February 3, 2000
The VSO meeting was called to order at 8:35 PM. John Rynearson noted that elections for chair and vice chair are coming up in March. Elwood Parsons and Dennis Terry will serve on the nominations committee with John Rynearson. John asked if anyone else wanted to be on the nominations committee. John noted the Bob Downing will stand for reelection. Jing Kwok, current Vice Chair, suggested that the nominations committee consider others for the position of Vice Chair.
The VSO meeting was adjourned at 8:40 AM for individual task group meetings.
The VSO meeting was called to order again at 11:00 AM and the plenary reports were given.
Hermann Strass noted that opportunities exist at European trade shows to promote VMEbus by coordinating members efforts. Hermann asked for member help in furthering the visibility of VMEbus in Europe.
Jim Botte reviewed some good "rules of thumb" regarding backplane power layout. See attachments.
There being no further business the VSO meeting was adjourned at 11:30 AM.
