VSO Minutes

July 23-24, 2003

Park City, Utah

 

 

Elwood Parsons called the meeting to order at 8:30 AM and asked members to introduce themselves.  After introductions the minutes from the previous meeting were approved.  The agenda was reviewed.  A VITA 42 working group meeting was scheduled for Thursday morning.

 

John Rynearson gave the VITA report.  A web log (blog) link is now available on the VITA web page to a list of topics sent out by Ray Alderman to the VITA member reflector.  The January 2004 Bus and Board will be held in Long Beach again next year.  More details will be forth coming.

 

John Rynearson gave the standards report.  See presentation.

 

John reviewed the reasons for RAND licensing on patented technology contained in a standard and stated the VSO patent policy.  See presentation.  John asked for patent disclosures.  None were given.

 

John discussed the revisions that were being made to the VSO Policies and Procedures.  To maintain ANSI accreditation, ANSI now requires each standards development organization (SDO) to develop their own procedures based on ANSIšs new essential requirements document.  The VSO has until May 2004 to submit its new procedure.

VITA 34 Review

Bob Downing presented a review of the VITA 34 effort and explained the connector selection process.  A drawing was held to determine the order of connector presenters.  The following speakers presented candidate connectors for VITA 34.

Jim Balistreri, JAE, MJ109

 

A general discussion of connectors ensured.  The group then broke for lunch.

The ballot for the VITA 34 connector was held.  Out of those eligible to ballot 25 ballots were cast.  Tycošs Multigig connector received 16 ballots and was declared the VITA 34 connector choice.

 

John Rynearson spoke about the origins of VITA 34, what its original goals were, and asked members to review these goals against the changes over the past four years. 

 

VITA 41, VXS

Bob Tufford, Motorola, reviewed the status of VITA 41.  See presentation.  Bob discussed a series of plug fests scheduled for later in the year to test out VITA 41 mechanical and electrical features.

 

Gino Nanninga, Positronics, gave an update on the power connector and passed around sample parts.

 

Bob Tufford announced that Motorola will have prototype alignment keys that can be used for plug fest demos.  Contact Bob for more information.

 

VITA 41 9U Proposal

Doug Endo, Raytheon, gave a presentation on his proposal to develop a 9U VITA 41 form factor.  See presentation.  A signup list was circulated and three sponsors were obtained to create a working group.  The membership discussed whether or not the mechanical work should be done under ANSI/VITA 1.3 or ANSI/VITA 30.  One proposal was to add the mechanicals to ANSI/VITA 1.3 and create a new VITA 41.x document for the electricals.

VITA 46

Stewart Dewar, DY4, reviewed the status of VITA 46.  The working group has split into two sub committees to examine two different approaches to providing more I/O pins.  See presentations.  John Rynearson gave a presentation for Dick DeBock on Dickšs P0 proposal.  See presentation.

 

Edmund Garstkiewicz, Harting, gave a presentation on a 7 row DIN connector concept that would be intermatable with 3 and 5 row DIN connectors.

 

The meeting was adjourned for the day.

 

 

Thursday, July 24, 2003

 

Elwood Parsons called the meeting to order and asked for announcements.  John Rynearson announced that he has received notification of ANSIšs recognition of VITA 32, Processor PMC.  VITA 32 will be put into ANSI format and will then be available for the VITA website.

 

Working group reports were given.  John Rynearson discussed future meetings.  All present said they would like to come back to Park City for a future meeting.

 

The VSO meeting was adjourned and the group broke up into informal sessions.  The VITA 42 working held a ballot review meeting.
